Biography
Maiher Singh Virk is a Canada-based Jori and Tabla artist with more than sixteen years of rigorous training in the classical percussion traditions of Punjab and Benares. He began his musical education at the age of five under Sri Harpal Singh Kalla and, from the age of nine, studied with Grammy Award-winning maestro Ustad Sukhvinder Singh “Pinky.” Grounded in the oral tradition and the discipline of intensive riyaaz, his playing is marked by rhythmic precision, depth, and a strong commitment to cultural heritage. Fluent in both Jori and Tabla, a rarer skill in the present day, he brings equal command and sensitivity to each instrument.
His versatility allows him to move fluidly across a wide range of musical styles, including Jori and Tabla repertoire, Solo Repertoire, Instrumental Accompaniment, Gurbani Kirtan, Khayal and Dhrupad Accompaniment, Kathak, and Cross-Cultural Collaborations. He has regularly performed across Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, India, and Puerto Rico.
Alongside his artistic practice, Maiher is completing a Psychology major with a minor in Music at Glendon College, York University, Toronto, Canada. His academic studies deepen his understanding of emotion, learning, and identity, enriching both his performances and his approach to teaching.
His accomplishments include presenting his first Jori solo at the age of six in 2010 and later performing Sri Guru Nanak Taal (13½ beats) with his Guruji: Ustad Sukhvinder Singh ‘Pinky’ Ji for the first time in 2024. He made his India debut in Mumbai in 2025, accompanying his Guruji, followed by a performance with his Guruji in Kolkata at the Swara Samrat Festival before legendary artists including Pt. Kumar Bose and Pt. Tejendra Narayan Majumdar. That same year, he delivered a Tabla solo at the Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan in Punjab, fulfilling his late mother’s wishes, and marking his debut performance in his ancestral homeland.
Maiher views rhythm as a universal language of healing, connection, and cross-cultural dialogue. Through performance and pedagogy, he works to bridge artistic traditions and foster deeper emotional and cultural understanding.
